About Me

Cara McMahon – MA (Social & Organisational Psychology), BA (Psychology) & Graduate Diploma of Counselling.

I was born and raised in Ireland, I moved to Melbourne 19 years ago. After a corporate career that focused on management training and development skills and life coaching, I chose to change the direction of my work. I re-trained, and for the last 9 years I have worked as a Counsellor in Community Health in Footscray and in a High School in Essendon, alongside running my own private practice on a part time basis.

I have recently moved into private practice in a full time capacity.

Moving to a different country and later changing careers has given me valuable and unique perspectives and insight in what it means to embrace and be challenged by life changing events. My personal experiences allow me to be an empathetic in exploring a broad range of issues including life transitions.

The more I work in this area the more I realise how resilient people are, but at times they can forget this, I am passionate about working with clients to deepen their self-awareness and to find ways to resolve the issues they are facing. My open and positive communication style facilitates an non-judgemental environment that allows a person to give voice to their emotional life. I support the gentle exploration of past experiences and how these shape and organise a person’s life now. I believe in encouraging an individual’s growth through their own unique lived experience.

I am trained and experienced in the use of psychological focused approaches, such as – Person Centre Therapy, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT); Narrative Therapy; as well as general approaches to problem solving, goal setting and planning.
